Professor Eunyu Kim’s principal research interest is understanding how plants and microalgae cope with environmental stresses to improve crop resilience and develop sustainable bioenergy solutions. She primarily focuses on regulating stress-responsive mechanisms and their potential applications in both crops and microalgae. A key aspect of her research is investigating the dynamics of cellular compartments under diverse environmental stresses using molecular biology techniques. By integrating epigenomics, lipid metabolism studies, and CRISPR-based genome editing, she explores how plants and microalgae modulate cellular structures and functions to adapt to changing environments.
Professor Kim earned her Ph.D. in Biology from Yonsei University in South Korea. After a short postdoctoral training period, she worked as a research professor at Yonsei University. Before joining Duke Kunshan, she was a research associate professor at the Center for Excellence in Molecular Plant Sciences (CEMPS), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Shanghai.
At Duke Kunshan University, she launched the CReAtE (Climate-Resilient Agricultural Engineering) Lab in 2022 (https://eunyukimlab.com/) to lead research on plant resilience and microalgal bioengineering with applications in agriculture and renewable energy. She has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles in top-tier journals, including Nature Plants, The Plant Cell, Plant Journal, and Plant Physiology. Additionally, she holds 23 international patents covering innovations in plant stress adaptation and genome engineering. Her research has been supported by multiple competitive grants, including funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC).
Beyond Duke Kunshan, Professor Kim also leads a research team at the Center for Genome Engineering (CGE), Institute for Basic Sciences (IBS), Korea, where she supervises Ph.D. students and collaborates on cutting-edge genome engineering projects. She is also the Vice President of the Korean Scientists and Engineers Association in China (KSEACH), actively fostering international scientific collaborations.
