CReAtE Lab and XJTLU AMD Lab Host Joint Workshop on Microalgae, Biomaterials and Bioelectronic Interfaces

The CReAtE Lab at Duke Kunshan University and the Advanced Microelectronic Devices (AMD) Lab at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) came together for the DKU CReAtE Lab–XJTLU AMD Lab Workshop 2026, titled “From Photosynthesis to Bioelectronics,” on August 28, 2026, at Duke Kunshan University.

Centered on the theme “Microalgae, Biomaterials and Bioelectronic Interfaces,” the workshop brought together researchers from both labs for a day of presentations, scientific discussion, and exchange at the intersection of biological systems and electronic technologies.

The first session, Biomaterials – Microalgae, opened with remarks from Prof. Eunyu Kim, who introduced the DKU–XJTLU collaborative project and the potential of microalgae as future biomaterials. Presentations by Matyas Syptak, Thomas Li, Dr. Joong-Tak Yoon, Mengwei Cheng, Maria Paz Ormeño Vasquez, Hyeonsik Yoon, and Shaban Muhammad explored topics including microalgae identification and strain selection, genomic engineering, physiological characterization, isolation and mutagenesis, climate-resilient microalgae, and low-cost monitoring technologies.

The afternoon session, Bioelectronics, opened with remarks from Prof. Jangyong Kim of the XJTLU AMD Lab. Hala El Mir, Zixue Han, and Xi Luo presented their work on multi-channel monitoring systems for biophotovoltaic cells and electrochemical measurements using screen-printed electrodes. Prof. Jangyong Kim also shared the DKU–XJTLU collaborative vision for advancing research at the interface of biology and electronics.

The workshop concluded with closing remarks from Prof. Eunyu Kim, marking another step forward in the collaboration between the CReAtE and AMD Labs.
